UKHEC Annual Seminar 4/5 December 2000

The UKHEC annual seminar is a two day event. This year the Annual Seminar is being held at MRCCS. The two days cover different aspects of UKHEC work. The first day concentrates on a specialist topic that is of increasing interest to those using very large computing systems, namely visualization. The second day presents a summary of the work done over the past year by UKHEC and will contain much information about current developments in High-End Computing in a form readily accessible to UK researchers. This is an opportunity to gain a comprehensive view of the techniques which will be important for computational research projects over the next few years.

UKHEC staff will also be able to give informal advice and comment about your research and training needs in computational science. It is, equally importantly, an opportunity for us to hear from UK researchers what their HEC needs are and this input will help to guide next year's UKHEC programme.

You can book for both events separately or together (we would encourage you to consider attending the whole seminar). Booking details are given below. MRCCS will book accomodation if you request it, you can pay on departure. Please note that the two events are in different locations on campus, we provide Web links to both venues below. Please state clearly when booking which days you wish to attend. To book places please contact claire.l.green@man.ac.uk

Day 1 (Monday): Visualization and High End Computing

UKHEC holds an annual two day event to present its work to the user community. This year the event is being held at MRCCS. The first day presents a visualization seminar with invited speakers from the UK and from international sites involved in ground-breaking work in High-End Computing. The emphasis in this year's seminar is on the contribution visualization can make to High-End Computing and the international invitees are from the Bioengineering Group at the University of Auckland NZ. They are pioneering techniques which combine High Performance Computing with visualization. David Bullivant from the Bioengineering group is staying for a week at MRCCS and will be available to talk to PDRAs who wish to know more about the uses of visualization in High End Computing. For more details see UKHEC Workshop: Scientific Visualisation 4th December, 2000. The seminar will be held at Mandec which is part of the University of Manchester campus.

Day 2 (Tuesday): Developments in High End Computing in Year 2000

On Day Two there will be presentations from all the UKHEC sites, two from EPCC and Daresbury and one from MRCCS, plus a keynote speech from the Auckland Bioengieering Group. The Annual Seminar is an opportunity for UKHEC to present to the user community a summary of the most important work carried out by UKHEC over the year. The talks will cover UKHEC work in the following topics: "Beowulf Clusters, Java, Visualization, the 'Computational Grid' and the UKHEC Training and Development Programme ". The provisional programme is available..

The seminar will be held in the Old Hall at Hulme Hall which is 10 minutes walking distance from the University of Manchester campus.

PDRA Training

The Visualization seminar is combined with the PDRA training programme and David Bullivant from the Auckland Bioengineering group will be available at MRCCS for the whole week to discuss specialist visualization matters. If you wish to book a separate time to consult with David and UKHEC visualization experts please contact john.brooke@man.ac.uk
