Shared Memory Systems

A significant number of parallel computers utilise shared memory architectures. This can take the form of a single box containing many processing elements, all accessing the same memory, or a cluster of such boxes, linked with some interconnect, allowing the boxes to be used as a single resource.

This half-day seminar consists of 3 talks concerned with the programming of these architectures.

Programme

The event will start at 2pm. The programme will include the following talks.

Mark Bull (EPCC, University of Edinburgh), "OpenMP: Current Implementations and Future Directions."
Click here for a PDF version of Mark's slides.

Kevin Roy (CSAR, University of Manchester), "Is programming OpenMP really as easy as everyone says?".
Click here for a PDF version of Kevin's slides.

Jürgen Dreher (Applied Mathematics, University of St. Andrews), "Parallel Mesh-Adaptive Fluid Simulations Using a POSIX-Threads/MPI Hybrid."
Click here for a PDF version of Jürgen's slides. Further, two MPEG movies were also shown: movie 1 and movie 2

Access Grid

In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, the seminar will be broadcast over the Access Grid. The talks themselves will be given from both Edinburgh and Manchester.

You can attend in person at either location or participate in the seminar via the Access Grid.

A list of UK eScience Centres, which may have Access Grid nodes, can be found here. Locations of all Access Grid nodes can be found here.

If you intend to utilise the Access Grid, please let us know exactly which node you wish to use.

Registration

Attendance at UKHEC events is free to UK academics.

If you would like to participate, please email ukhec-epcc@ukhec.ac.uk and let us know if you are attending at either Edinburgh or Manchester or at which particular Access Grid node.

Getting to EPCC

This event will be held at EPCC, Edinburgh, UK and on the Access Grid. Information on getting to the EPCC can be found here.
