The Second International Conference on The Practical Application of Java12th - 14th April 2000, Manchester, UK.Lorna SmithUnder part funding from UKHEC, EPCC recently presented a talk on Benchmarking Java Grande Applications at the Second International Conference on The Practical Application of Java, which took place on the 12th - 14th April in Manchester, U.K. The range of delegates was fairly diverse with a number of researchers, developers and industrial users, with interests in Java applications ranging from e-commerce, education, network management and document management.A number of invited talks were given, for example Ken Arnold discussed the JINI API for dynamic networks and service discovery and Jose Mareira discussed the use of Java in large scale scientific applications (Grande Applications). EPCC presented a paper on Benchmarking Java Grande Applications. This described a number of results obtained on various systems from the Java Grande Benchmark Suite, a Suite developed by EPCC to test the specific demands Java Grande applications place on a Java execution environment.
