Benchmarking New Systems
UKHEC presents a range of benchmark results and related
information about current HEC systems on this page.
Many of these results are featured at the annual Daresbury Machine
Evaluation Workshop (MEW)
At the MEW there is an
opportunity to learn about vendors latest products and do comparative
benchmarking before and during the workshop.
For up-to-date information contact Steve Andrews.

Benchmark Suites
A technical report describing a benchmarking procedure for parallel computers
and surveying the application benchmark suites available is in preparation.
Here are some of the suites we have worked with:
-
The DisCo Suite
Daresbury Laboratory, under the Distributed Computing Programme
have compared the performance of a number of different computer
systems from PCs to parallel computer nodes using a variety of
software mostly from the discipline of computational chemistry. Results
of these are available along with some other useful benchmarks via
the DisCo
Web site. A paper analysing these benchmarks and a
presentation is also available.
-
The OpenMP Microbenchmark Suite
EPCC have designed a set of microbenchmarks to measure synchronisation and loop
scheduling overhead for language constructs in OpenMP. The benchmarks can be
downloaded from the
OpenMP Microbenchmark s page. Further information is also available from the
UKHEC
OpenMP page.
-
The Java Grande Forum Benchmark Suite
EPCC has developed a suite of Java Benchmark codes which range from low level
benchmarks to application codes. These can be downloaded from the
Java Grande Forum Benchmark page.
Further information is available from the UKHEC Java page.
-
The JASPA Benchmark
Daresbury Laboratory has been comparing Java for numerical applications with other
languages, principally Fortran90 and C.
A small benchmark
suite has been generated,
initially focusing on sparse matrix algebra. This may be
extended in future work. Several implementations of Java, C and
Fortran have been compared on Pentium, IBM and Sun platforms.
